What materials are medical masks made of

May 26, 2020

Medical masks are generally made of three layers (non-woven fabric) structure, which is made of two layers of spunbonded non-woven fabric and a key filtration lay called melt blown (BFE99, BFE95)

Mask-structure

Medical masks are divided into three layers: the outer layer is designed to prevent droplets (spunbonded non-woven fabric) + the middle layer is filtration layer (melt blown) + the inner layer is hygroscopic layer (spunbonded non-woven fabric).

Spunbond non woven fabric (outer layer) is non woven fabric made by PP filament fiber. The advantages are waterproof, soft. The disadvantage is unwashable.

Melt blown (middle layer) : this material is the principle of bacteria isolation. The main material is polypropylene, and it is electric charging which can capture dust (droplets containing pneumonia virus will be adsorbed on the surface of static electricity melt blown so that virus can’t pass through).

Spunbond non woven fabric (inner layer) is non woven fabric made by PP filament fiber.
